Baron Karl Lewin Leopold von und zu Gilsa (born November 20, 1820 in Aschersleben , † January 23, 1883 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

He came from the Althessian noble family von and zu Gilsa and was the son of Ernst Heinrich August von and zu Gilsa (1785-1826) and his wife Wilhelmine Amalie Henriette, born von Thadden (* September 28, 1792; † March 2, 1847). She was the daughter of Lieutenant General Johann Leopold von Thadden . His father was a captain and squadron chief in the 10th hussar regiment in Aschersleben.

Military career

On August 15, 1838, Gilsa was transferred from the Cadet Corps to the 26th Infantry Regiment as a Second Lieutenant . In 1849 he took part in the Baden campaign. From December 1, 1850 to the end of March 1851, he was adjutant of the 13th Mobile Infantry Division, from December 6, 1851 to May 3, 1852, adjutant of the 7th Landwehr Brigade, and from May 3, 1852 to August 11, 1857, adjutant of the 13th Infantry Brigade . Promoted to Premier Lieutenant on June 15, 1852 and captain on May 8, 1855 , he was appointed company commander on August 11, 1857 .

After he was transferred to the 9th Infantry Regiment on July 22, 1858 , he became an adjutant at the General Command of the VII Army Corps with a patent from July 22, 1852 . On June 14, 1859 he was transferred to the surplus major and on September 20, 1859, with release from his command as a commander to the 1st battalion (in Conitz in Pomerania ) of the 21st Landwehr Regiment and on July 1, 1860, he was combined as a battalion commander in the 21st, later transferred to the 8th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 61 , and on October 7, 1862, under position à la suite of the regiment, appointed commander of the 2nd Battalion of the Duke of Saxony-Altenburg Fusilier Regiment. In 1866 Gilsa took part in the campaign against Bavaria . After three years and seven days of service, he was transferred to 1st Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 22 in the same capacity on November 7, 1869 . With the beginning of the war against France , Gilsa became the commander of the Poznan Landwehr Brigade in the 3rd Reserve Division under Lieutenant General Kummer . In this position he took part in the sieges of Metz and Longwy , the battle of Noisseville and the fighting at Rupigny. For this Gilsa was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class.

On March 20, 1871, he was appointed commander of the 6th Infantry Brigade under position à la suite of the regiment . On August 18, 1871, he was promoted to major general and on September 21, 1876 to lieutenant general. On January 3, 1878, his retirement was approved.

He married Agnes Scherbending on October 5, 1847 (born November 19, 1825, † January 7, 1901). The couple had a daughter: Agnes (born June 4, 1852).
