Harvard Five

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Harvard Five was a group of architects who settled in New Canaan, Connecticut in the 1940s : John M. Johansen , Marcel Breuer , Landis Gores , Philip Johnson, and Eliot Noyes . Marcel Breuer was a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design while Gores, Johansen, Johnson, and Noyes studied there.

They were all under the influence of Walter Gropius , director of the architecture course at Harvard.

The small town of New Canaan is known for its numerous buildings of modern architecture . Around 100 modern houses were built there; about 20 of them have already been torn down. However, four have since been added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places : the Johnson Glass House , Landis Gores House , Richard and Geraldine Hodgson House, and Noyes House .

Other well-known architects lived in New Canaan and designed homes for themselves and their clients, including John Black Lee , Hugh Smallen , Victor Christ-Janer , Alan Goldberg , and Carl Koch .
