Jerry Schatzberg (born June 26, 1927 in New York City ) is an American director and photographer .

life and career

Jerry Schatzberg was born into a Jewish family of furriers in the Bronx. Jerry Schatzberg studied at the University of Miami and then worked as a photographer for magazines such as Vogue , Esquire and others in the 1960s . He shot the iconic cover image for Bob Dylan's album Blonde on Blonde , which shows the musician slightly out of focus. In 1968 he shot the photos for the music album We're Only in It for the Money by The Mothers of Invention . He gained his first experience as a director with the staging of commercials.

In 1970 he made his debut as a director and screenwriter with the film Puzzle of a Downfall Child , among others with Faye Dunaway in the lead role. A year later he directed the drama The Panic in Needle Park , a film about a drug addict couple in New York. Al Pacino and Kitty Winn took the lead roles. For this film, Schatzberg was nominated for the Grand Prix for the first time . He won this in Cannes in 1973 with his next film Asphalt Blossoms from 1973 ex aequo with Alan Bridges ' costume drama Message for Lady Franklin . Gene Hackman and, in turn, Al Pacino played two tramps who form an unusual friendship. Schatzberg also won the Danish Bodil for best non-European film for his work . In 1976 he made Sweet Revenge and was nominated again for the main prize in Cannes. In 1980 he made the music film On the Road Again , an autobiographical about and with country singer Willie Nelson , who was nominated for an Oscar for his music . The 1989 literary film adaptation The Recovered Friend earned him his last nomination to date for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. His last film so far, entitled The Day the Ponies Come Back , was made in 2000. For this he worked as a screenwriter for the second time.

Jerry Schatzberg has directed films from a wide variety of genres in his career. That was a strong point in 1984, a comedy and youth film, four years after he turned with Tropic was an action movie.

In 2006 he published with Thin Wild Mercury , a book about Bob Dylan . The work was published by Genesis Publications .

Jerry Schatzberg was and is still active as a photographer, taking photos of well-known and diverse personalities such as Robert Redford , Fidel Castro and Sammy Davis Jr.
