Stephen B. Grimes

Stephen B. Grimes (born April 18, 1927 in Weybridge , † September 12, 1988 in Positano ) was a British art director and set designer who won an Oscar for best production design in 1986 .

Life

Grimes began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1953 with the film A Princess in Love and worked on the stage equipment of more than thirty films until his death.

Academy Awards In 1965 he was the first to win an Oscar for best production design in the black and white film The Night of the Iguana (1964) by John Huston with Richard Burton , Deborah Kerr and Ava Gardner in the lead roles . 1971 followed a nomination for the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Film Award) for the best production design in the melodrama Ryan's daughter (1970) by David Lean with Robert Mitchum , Trevor Howard and Christopher Jones . He got another Oscar nomination for best production design in 1974 with William Kiernan for The Way We Were (1973) by Sydney Pollack with Barbra Streisand , Robert Redford and Bradford Dillman .

At the 1986 Academy Awards, he and Josie MacAvin received the Oscar for best production design in Out of Africa (1985) by Sydney Pollack with Meryl Streep , Robert Redford and Klaus Maria Brandauer .
