William Kiernan

William R. Kiernan (born April 2, 1908 in New York City , † November 19, 1973 in Los Angeles ) was an American film set designer .

Life

William Kiernan was under contract as a production designer at Columbia Pictures from 1943 . By 1973 he was involved in more than 100 film productions. He worked with a number of important directors, such as George Cukor , Fritz Lang , Edward Dmytryk , Robert Wise and William Wyler . He created sets for film musicals such as A Goddess on Earth (1947), film comedies such as Die ist nicht von Yesterday (1950), several westerns and crime films in the style of film noir such as Affair in Trinidad (1952) and Hot Iron (1953) .

Over the years he and other production designers have been nominated six times for the Oscar in the category of Best Production Design, including Pal Joey (1957) with Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth and Gunboat on the Yangtze Kiang (1966) with Steve McQueen . However, he never won the Oscar. He died in Los Angeles in 1973 at the age of 65 .
