Walter Holscher
Walter Holscher (born January 23, 1900 in Hamburg ; † August 7, 1973 in North Hollywood , Los Angeles ; actually Walter Paul Erhard Hölscher ) was an American production designer of German origin.
Life
A native of Walter Holscher grew up in the district Altona in Hamburg and received training as a plasterer . On November 23, 1923, he moved to the United States . According to the 1930 census, Hölscher, who was now called Holscher, was now based in Los Angeles . He was naturalized on May 10, 1935. In Hollywood he began his film career at Columbia Pictures in 1939 as an outfitter and assistant to production designers. As such, he often worked with the film architect Lionel Banks , including Frank Capra's Mr. Smith goes to Washington .
In 1943, Holscher made his first appearance as chief art director at Columbia, initially only entrusting him with B-films . From 1946 he was also responsible for the studio's more prestigious productions such as Der Jazzsänger (1946). By 1965 he was involved in more than 70 films. For Address Unknown (1944) and Pal Joey , he was nominated together with other production designers for the Oscar in the category Best Production Design. However, he and his colleagues could not prevail against the competition. From 1956 he also worked several times for US television.
