Zoran Perisic

Zoran Perisic (born March 16, 1940 in Prokuplje , Yugoslavia ) is a Serbian special effects artist , director and inventor of the Zoptic mechanism.

Life

Perisic first moved to London to study . He then went to Hollywood , where he worked as the uncredited special effects department on Stanley Kubrick's science fiction film A Space Odyssey . In 1976 he was responsible for the optical special effects for the horror film The Devil's Men with Donald Pleasence and Peter Cushing in the lead roles. In the meantime he developed various special effects devices for front projection and 3-D recordings. Its Zoptic mechanism was used in 1978 for the trick shots of the flying superhero in Superman . For this invention he received the 1979 Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema and the Special Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . The following year he also received the Technical Achievement Award .

In 1985 he was responsible for the model effects of Disney's Oz - A Fantastic World , for which he received his only regular Oscar nomination. The following year he made his first feature film as a director with Sky Bandits , a science fiction film set during the First World War . His second directorial work was The Phoenix and the Magic Carpet , an adventure film with Peter Ustinov as the narrator. In 1988 he received the Scientific and Engineering Award, the third award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his technical contributions to film.
