Robert Hofrichter (born December 23, 1957 in Bratislava ) is an Austrian zoologist , marine biologist , conservationist , author , journalist and nature photographer . Since the end of the 1990s he has devoted himself intensively to marine protection and founded several non-governmental organizations such as MareMundi and Red Sea Environmental Center for this purpose .

life and work

Robert Hofrichter grew up in Bratislava . In 1981 he emigrated to Austria and has lived in Salzburg ever since . After studying biology / zoology at the University of Salzburg , which he completed with a doctorate in 1995 , he devoted himself to journalism for several years and published around twenty books in which the protection of species and habitats was always the focus. He also taught marine biology at private marine stations around the Mediterranean . Since 2003 Hofrichter has dedicated himself to nature and marine protection within the framework of his own organizations that he founded. The “forum nature & future”, launched in 2004, is an initiative and platform which, under the name “The Return of Wild Animals”, was primarily dedicated to native, threatened wild animal species. The result was a book of the same name and a monograph on the lynx, as well as short reports for television and educational articles in newspapers and magazines, which were intended to contribute to the population's greater tolerance towards the returning wild animals - not least with regard to the three large carnivores, bear and wolf and lynx . In 2001, Volume I of the three-volume work “The Mediterranean - Fauna, Flora, Ecology” published by Hofrichter was published. Volume II / 1 followed in 2003. The book, which has been compiled by an international team of authors, summarizes all species found in the Mediterranean. The marine protection organization mare-mundi was founded to promote the publication of the final volume and to contribute to marine protection in the Mediterranean. Hofrichter has been active on the Red Sea since 2003 with the Red Sea Environmental Center, which he founded. The research of the coral reef ecosystems, education of the younger generation and marine conservation are the focus of the activities of the RSEC. In cooperation with the WDR, Hofrichter worked on seven episodes of the series “Threatened Paradises”, which advocates more sustainability in the tourism industry and the preservation of natural habitats.

In 2017 Hofrichter's book The Mysterious Life of Mushrooms was published. The fascinating wonders of a hidden world . The work is not about identifying mushrooms, but about immersing yourself in their environment.
