Prokuplje ( Serbian - Cyrillic Прокупље ; German outdated Sankt Prokopius ) is a city in Serbia . It is the capital of the municipality of the same name and the administrative seat of the Toplica district in the south of the country.

The city of Prokuplje has 27,163 inhabitants (2011). It is located between the Jastrebac and Pasjaca mountain ranges on the Toplica River. Prokuplje is a train station on the Niš - Pristina railway line .

On the local mountain Hisar ( 358  m. I. J. ) is a medieval fortress with a striking tower , which is named after Jug Bogdan, a nobleman who played an important role in the battle on the Blackbird Field .

Prokuplje is named after St. Prokopius, whose bones were transferred from Niš in 1386 to the town's St. Prokopius Church.

Some of the city's larger industrial plants include: Prokupac (alcoholic beverages), Hissar (food), FOM (a metalworking factory), Toplicanka (a textile factory) and LEONI (a factory that makes wiring harnesses for automobiles).

The astronomical station Vidojevica has been built on the nearby 1150 m high Mt. Vidojevica in recent years . The outstation of the Belgrade observatory is currently equipped with a 60 cm reflector telescope , which will be supplemented in 2015/16 by a large telescope that can be controlled automatically.
