biography

Hayes, whose siblings Bonnie and Kevin are also professional musicians (Kevin Hayes is a drummer and played in Robert Cray's band ), got his first guitar at the age of nine and learned the instrument in all possible styles, but with a special focus to that of jazz. As a teenager he played in various bands and in 1978 was given the opportunity to accompany the well-known blues singer Esther Phillips on her European tour. Upon his return, he learned that Huey Lewis was looking for a guitarist for his new band, Huey Lewis and the American Express , which included Johnny Colla, Mario Cipollina and Bill Gibson from Sound Hole, and Sean Hopper from Clover . He auditioned and got the job.

With Huey Lewis & The News, as the band was now called after a name change, Hayes recorded eight albums by 2001. He left the group to have more time for his family, but occasionally jumps in as a guitarist when Stef Burns is unable to attend.
