Live at 25 is the first live album by the US rock band Huey Lewis & the News , released in 2005 . It was also released in a more-song version on DVD-Video and as the last album the band recorded with saxophonist Ron Stallings , who passed away in 2009.

background

Huey Lewis & The News was formed in 1979 through the merger of members of the groups Clover and Soundhole and was originally called Huey Lewis and the American Express . When the group signed a record deal with Chrysalis Records , the record company insisted on a name change, so that the band operated as Huey Lewis & The News from that point on.

On the occasion of their 25th anniversary, the nine-member group recorded two concerts in the "Big Room" of the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico on December 14th and 15th, 2004 in order to publish a live album for the first time. The production took Huey Lewis along with Johnny Colla .

Live at 25 was released on June 27, 2005 (USA: May 17, 2005) on CD .

reception

Michael Edele wrote for laut.de that songs like The Heart Of Rock'n'Roll , I Want A New Drug , Power Of Love or (Too) Hip To Be Square had "a few years under their belt," a real classic "But time has never hurt", and that's exactly how it is here. He criticizes that “the ten-man ensemble is cuddling too much” through his songs, but the setlist of the album really reads “like a best-of list.” “Despite or perhaps because of the extremely differentiated mixed sounds” But sometimes there is a lack of the "last, decisive kick that would breathe new life into the songs". “Really cool” are the (semi-) a cappella numbers It's Alright and Bad Is Bad. All in all, Live At 25 exudes a “cozy bar atmosphere that could have used a little more freshness”, but the audience on site was probably satisfied. However, Huey Lewis still has charm and the phrase "Cool is a rule" still applies "to Huey Lewis & The News today."

Thomas Müller, editor at the radio station SWR3 , said that Huey (Lewis) had "almost the same power, the same mischievous grin and the distinctive smoky-scratched voice" as at the band's wedding in the 1980s. The front man seems “amazingly fresh, also because he has a certain motto in life”: “Those who work less have more fun in life”. Lewis invested "no time in new studio productions", but rather stood "live on stage with his best-of program." On Live at 25 , "the Californian presented almost all of his hits in an unbroken playful mood." The live sound sounds " very authentic ”and the audience is“ in a party mood ”.
