Weather is the title of the tenth and probably last studio album by the US rock band Huey Lewis & the News , released on February 14, 2020 . It is the follow-up album to Soulsville , which was released in 2010 .

background

Huey Lewis & the News released the album Soulsville in 2010 , a tribute album to the artists and soul musicians on the Stax Records label . Manager Bob Brown and the band Brown had agreed that an album with covers of songs by the Stax artists could serve to bring out something that would interest the audience and at the same time draw new attention to the music of the Stax artists.

The reactions to the album were mostly positive. For example, Rolling Stone wrote that Huey Lewis & The News played around 100 gigs a year, "the return on a successful career that rewards the US classic rock audience with lifelong loyalty". With Soulsville there is now “a reasonably entertaining record” with old Stax songs that are played “confidently and admittedly without any pop compromises”. Laut.de said that “none of the 14 numbers were designed for a hit single”, that is not even necessary. Soulsville is "just a pleasant album for a good time." It may be "actually an album for old sacks" - but good soul and blues are "timeless."

In the years following the release, the band was mainly active in the USA and made numerous appearances, drawing on their extensive work. The band performed an average of 125 gigs per year. In addition, she always had the opportunity to work on new songs in different studios and record them.

“We have been collecting over the years, sometimes recording a song here, sometimes going into the studio there. Telling new stories at a ripe old age doesn't get any easier. We approached the work very relaxed, also because nobody is seriously waiting for new music from us "

- Huey Lewis in: Rocks, issue 02.2020, page 73

Various guest musicians participated in the recordings of the songs. Jeffrey Babko played the piano on I am There for You, Chris Barnes added a trumpet to the brass section of Remind Me Why I Love You Again , and Bryan Dyer sang backing vocals on Hurry Back Baby. Niko Ellison was hired for the backing vocals on I am There for You, Hurry Back Baby, Remind Me Why I Love You Again and Pretty Girls Everywhere , Lorin Robin sang on One of the Boys, while John McFee Steel sang this song with country touches Guitar played. Karl Perazzo contributed percussion instruments for Remind Me Why I Love You Again . Ric Wilson completes the line-up for I am There for You as guitarist .

In 2018 singer Huey Lewis , who has had Menière's disease since 1985, lost his remaining hearing before a concert in Dallas . He explained that since then he has sometimes been able to hear, sometimes not, and that he can only perceive music as noise. The release of a full-fledged album with ten songs, as the band had actually planned, was no longer an option. It was therefore decided to finish producing and publishing the seven songs that had been collected so far .

On September 27, 2019, the first single was the song Her Love is Killin 'Me, which, like the song While We're Young, released on December 6, 2019, was distributed exclusively via online music services .

With the album Weather , seven songs were released on February 14, 2020, which were composed at different times. Her Love is Killin 'Me , for example, was already 25 years old when the album was released. In addition to six own songs, a cover version of the boogie song Pretty Girls Everywhere by Eugene Church found its way onto the album. Lewis was made aware of the song by Aaron Neville .

reception

Daniel Böhm wrote for Rocks that the “adverse health conditions” were “not to be heard” by Weather . With "esprit, great care and a lot of sunshine", Lewis managed to do what he had "musically always done". The “old eighties pop mannerisms” have long since grown into “a full, lush blues and R&B ensemble”. Böhm highlights While We're Young, the “ I am There for You, Her Love is Killin 'Me equipped with a cozy Rhodes piano , the“ funky ” Remind Me Why I Love You Again and“ the Vegas show blues ” Hurry Back Baby that you “just have to love”. The album may be too short, but take what you can get. Böhm awarded eight out of ten possible points.
