Fore! is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Huey Lewis & the News , released by Chrysalis in 1986 . It was the band's second album to top the album charts in the US. Six singles were released, five of which reached the top ten of the US singles charts . The songs Stuck With You and Jacob's Ladder each reached the top of the US charts . The European and Japanese editions of the album contained the song The Power of Love , known from the film Back to the Future , which was not part of the American edition.

Emergence

Huey Lewis & The News had celebrated worldwide success with the 1983 album Sports and received numerous awards for it. It was the band's first album to top the album charts in the United States and was featured in the music charts of the relevant European markets ( Great Britain and Germany ). Of the five singles released , four reached the top ten of the American hit lists, in Germany the song I Want a new Drug was the most successful. To date, Sports has been awarded seven platinum records .

After numerous concerts in 1984 and 1985, including Rock am Ring on May 25, 1985 , the band took the time to record the theme song for the film Back to the Future , The Power of Love , before going on tour continued into November 1985.

In addition to members of the band, well-known outside musicians were also involved in the songwriting: the song Jacob's Ladder was written by Bruce Hornsby and his brother John , and Kenny Loggins participated in Forest for the Trees . Numerous other artists were involved in the recordings as guest musicians. They included the wind players Greg Adams ( trumpet ), Emilio Castillo ( saxophone ), Richard Elliott (saxophone), Stephen Kupka (baritone saxophone) and Lee Thornburg (trumpet). Ralph Arista, Dwight Clark, Mike Duke, Riki Ellison, Jerome Fletcher David Jenkins, Ronnie Lott, Joe Montana and Jim Moran also contributed background vocals .

The album title is ambiguous: On the one hand, the word “Fore” is a warning call from golf , this reference is also made clear by the fact that bassist Mario Cippolina is shown on the back of the cover with a golf club in his hand. Phonetically , the title can also be understood as an indication that the release is the fourth (“Four”) album by the band.

Album cover

The cover of the album shows Huey Lewis and the other band members leaning against a wall. This wall belongs to Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley , which was attended by Huey Lewis , Bill Gibson , Sean Hopper, and Mario Cipollina . The cover can also be seen in the film American Psycho , in which Christian Bale plays the lead role. The character played by Bale, Patrick Bateman , took part for almost a minute in a discussion about the band and how the song Hip to be Square highlighted the "pleasures of conformity". He falsely states that the album was released in 1987.

reception

Fore! reached the top ten of the respective album charts in the USA, Great Britain and Germany . The album was awarded a gold record in the US on December 4, 1986, two months after its release, and went three times platinum by August 1988. In Germany, Fore! 1987 a gold record .

Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote for Allmusic that it was surprising that Fore! I suffered from an "overdose of the very ingredients" that made the previous album, Sports, "almost irresistible". It is "one thing to celebrate the Heart of Rock & Roll ," but quite another to announce that it is Hip to Be Square. “If all the songs were as catchy” as If This Is It or Heart and Soul that would be “no problem,” but they would not be, and the sound of the record was “so sterile that the news no longer felt like a functioning band “Listened to. Fore! is "an edible facsimile of sports, " but the album lacks "the fun that made the previous album."
