William Gibson (ice hockey player)

William James "Billy" Gibson (born April 22, 1927 in Merritt , British Columbia , † August 29, 2006 in Lethbridge , Alberta ) was a Canadian ice hockey player . At the 1952 Winter Olympics , he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

William Gibson began his career as a hockey player with the Lethbridge Native Sons, for which he was active for a year in the Alberta Junior Hockey League-South. From 1947 to 1951 the forward played for the Lethbridge Maple Leafs in the Western Canada Senior Hockey League. With the Lethbridge Maple Leafs, he represented Canada at the 1951 World Cup. He was then committed by the Edmonton Mercurys , with whom he represented his country at the 1952 Winter Olympics. A year after the tournament he returned for the 1953/54 season to the Lethbridge Native Sons, who were in the meantime in the Alberta-Montana Intermediate Hockey League. In the 1958/59 season he was short-term player-coach with the Lethbridge Maple Leafs. After his ice hockey career ended, he worked as a car salesman in Lethbridge.

International

For Canada Gibson took part in the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo , where he won the gold medal with his team. In eight games he scored 22 points scorer, including 15 goals. He had previously won the gold medal with his team at the 1951 World Cup .
