Pineapple Express is the title of a song by Johnny Colla , David Fredericks and Huey Lewis , released in 2008 , which was recorded by the American band Huey Lewis & the News for the soundtrack of the film of the same name, which in Germany was titled Ananas Express .

background

Huey Lewis & the News had landed a number one hit in the USA in 1985 with the song The Power of Love, recorded for the feature film Back to the Future , and also contributed another song ( Back in Time ) to the film's soundtrack.

Huey Lewis was hired by the production company to write a song for Pineapple Express . David Gordon Green , the director of the film, said the only requirement was that the song should be kept in the sound of the band's 80s works. It should also reflect the plot of the film, and Lewis should use the title of the film as often as possible.

“They said, 'We want a song called the Pineapple Express '. I said, 'Oh, this is going to be difficult.' They said, 'That's a strain of marijuana,' and I said, 'Like Panama Red? No problem! '”Recalled Lewis in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

The song was recorded by the band in Studio D in Sausalito. The production took Lewis and Colla.

reception

James Christopher Monger wrote for allmusic that the song was “a return to the sports era” of the band and reflected the “ bluesy , saxophone-driven backbeat” of The Heart of Rock & Roll and I Want a New Drug . It is "by no means a bad song", but the "lack of a memorable refrain" and the integration of a sound sample from actor Seth Rogen while smoking weed left "the impression of a parody."

Individual evidence

  1. "Our only input was, we told him we wanted it to sound like his 80s work that we loved so much. And we wanted to have the plot in it. And we wanted to have him say the title as many times as he could . There is a lot of alto sax. " firstshowing.net , accessed May 28, 2016
  2. "They said, 'We want a track called' Pineapple Express. ' I said, 'Ooh. That's going to be tough.' They said, 'It's a kind of marijuana.' I said, 'Like Panama Red? No problem.' " Lewis is part of the 'Pineapple' news, Los Angeles Times , August 5, 2008, accessed May 29, 2016

  5. "Pineapple Express" (the song) is a throwback to Sports-era Lewis, mirroring the bluesy, sax-driven backbeat of "Heart of Rock and Roll" and "I Want a New Drug." It's not a bad tune at all, but the lack of a memorable chorus and the inclusion of a sample of actor Seth Rogen taking bong hits keep things squarely in the parody camp. allmusic.com , accessed May 28, 2016
