Jorge Calandrelli
Jorge Calandrelli (born December 31, 1939 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine composer , arranger , pianist , conductor and music producer who was nominated for an Oscar in 1986 for the film drama The Color Purple and in 2001 for the fantasy film Tiger and Dragon .
Life
Jorge Calandrelli was born as the youngest of six children on New Year's Eve 1939 in Buenos Aires. His father, Matias Calandrelli, an excellent chess player, was a doctor, president of the Argentine Chess Club and, in his capacity as doctor, a lieutenant colonel in the Argentine army . His mother Nieves Solá Calandrelli, the daughter of the politician E. Solá, was a classical pianist and a member of the Jockey Club in Argentina. Various tours took Calandrelli with his quintet through Europe before he returned to Buenos Aires to support great artists as a pianist with his jazz trio both in the organization and implementation of their tours and negotiations with record companies. With Guillermo Iscla, he carried out formative self-studies including piano playing, musical settings with the composer Carlos Guastavino , compositions with the composer Roberto García Morillo and adapted harmonies with Jacobo Ficher . He gave master classes in contemporary composition together with the composer Gerardo Gandini .
Before Calandrelli moved to the USA in 1978 , he worked as a pianist, arranger and conductor in Argentina and Europe. His field of work extends to the areas of pop , jazz , Latin American music and classical music . Calandrelli composed, arranged or produced for the following artists, among others: Tony Bennett , Céline Dion , Roberto Carlos , Barbra Streisand , Julio Iglesias , Amy Winehouse , Andrea Bocelli , Josh Groban , Michael Bublé , Diana Krall , Kenny G , Elton John , Paul McCartney , kd lang , George Michael , Billy Joel , Queen Latifah , Mariah Carey , Aretha Franklin , Sting and Barry Manilow , Ricky Martin , Jennifer Lopez , Crowded House , Enrique Iglesias , Yo-Yo Ma , David Foster , Gloria Estefan , Jon Secada , Plácido Domingo , James Taylor , Paul Anka , Stevie Wonder , Gino Vannelli , Madonna , Marc Anthony , Neil Diamond , Bette Midler , Whitney Houston , Boston Symphony Orchestra , Vanessa Lynn Williams , Carrie Underwood , John Legend , Dixie Chicks and Elvis Costello .
Barbra Streisand said in an interview that Calandrelli definitely belongs to a select group of arrangers . Tony Bennett thanked Calandrelli for the many years of cooperation and the many beautiful arrangements . Johnny Mandel declared to be one of his greatest admirers . Phil Ramone praised his sensitivity and warmth and said he was one of the best . Celine Dion spoke of a top-class musician .
In 1985 Calandrelli wrote the Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra , a concerto in three movements ( Allegro , Adagio and Presto ) for jazz clarinet and orchestra based on the composers Stravinsky and Bartók . For this work he was awarded the Wavedon All Music Award as music composer of the year in 1986. Calandrelli was nominated for a Grammy Award 27 times. In addition to the two Oscar-nominated films, he was also involved in orchestrating Shining (1980) and Tron (1982). Together with his colleague, the composer Ettore Stratta, Calandrelli composed Latin American music ( Bolero , Bossa Nova , Tango ). His other works include a collection of piano pieces in collaboration with the pianist Sonya Belousova and a piano concerto diptych for piano and orchestra .
