Takao Saitō ( Japanese 斎 藤 孝 雄 , Saitō Takao ; born March 5, 1929 in Kyōto , Honshū ; † December 6, 2014 ) was a Japanese cameraman .

Life

Saitō worked between 1947 and 1961 in a total of nine films by the Japanese director Akira Kurosawa as a camera assistant. He then worked as a cameraman for Kurosawa for nine other films up to the film Madadayo in 1993. For Kurosawa's late work Ran , he was nominated together with Masaharu Ueda and Asakazu Nakai for the 1986 Oscar in the category Best Cinematography .
