occupation

Elling is a Norwegian feature film . The film is based on the Elling series of novels by the writer Ingvar Ambjørnsen . It was shot in 2001 by Petter Næss with Per Christian Ellefsen and Sven Nordin in the leading roles. The film was very successful in Norway.

The film shows the fears, neuroses and quirks of the two main characters and their struggle to find their way into normal everyday life.

action

After the death of his mother, the mentally unstable Elling is found in the closet by the police and ends up in a psychiatric ward for two years, where he shares a room with Kjell Bjarne. Elling and his roommate are finally released together and, as part of a rehabilitation program run by the Norwegian state, move into a shared apartment in Oslo that is being looked after by the social worker Frank Åsli. The two very different men find it very difficult to integrate into normal everyday life at first, even the phone, shopping or going to a restaurant become a major challenge, especially for Elling. Meanwhile, Kjell Bjarne's greatest concern is the courtship of her pregnant neighbor Reidun Nordsletten, because although he is constantly thinking about sex, he has not yet had any experience with women. In order not to stand in the way (and not to have to meet) the cautiously turtling couple and since he has discovered his poetic streak, Elling sets out to explore the lyrical Oslo nightlife. There he met the widowed poet Alfons Jørgensen. Elling writes his own poems on pieces of paper, which he then puts in sauerkraut packs and secretly puts on the shelf in the supermarket, signed with the anonymous letter "E". There is even an article in the newspaper about the “Sauerkraut poet”. Alfons Jørgensen owns an old Buick and (after Kjell Bjarne has repaired the car) invites Elling, Kjell Bjarne and the heavily pregnant Reidun to a trip to the sea. The next morning, Reidun went into labor. During the delivery, Elling and Kjell Bjarne - for once - drink wine.

criticism

"A subtle comedy carried out by good actors, which questions normality with a lot of sympathy for the two protagonists and offers bizarre thinking as a possible survival strategy."

Notes and awards

More than 800,000 Norwegians saw “Elling” in the cinema.

Petter Næss was also the director of the play "Elling", in which Per Christian Ellefsen and Sven Nordin were able to "practice" on stage over a hundred times. The shooting of the film took four weeks.

Due to the great success Eva Isaksen shot a prequel in 2003 . The plot of " Elling - Not without my mother " takes place during the lifetime of Elling's mother and thus before the film "Elling". Furthermore, Petter Næss shot a third part: " Elling - Lieb mich Morgen" (original title: Elling - Elsk meg i morgen) plays after Elling, so it is the sequel in which Kjell Bjarne, Reidun Nordsletten and Alfons Jørgensen play a role again. So far this film is only available in Norwegian.

In addition, "Elling" was nominated for an Oscar in 2002 in the " Best Foreign Language Film " category.
