Gottstreu is a district of the Wesertal community in the Kassel district of Hesse .
Geographical location
The small town of Gottstreu is located in northern Hesse on the left bank of the Oberweser on the densely wooded northeastern roof of the Reinhardswald . It is located about 18 km north of Hann. Münden , 29 km northeast of Kassel , twelve kilometers southeast of Bad Karlshafen , nine kilometers south-southwest of Uslar and three kilometers southeast of Gieselwerder , one of the administrative locations of the Wesertal municipality with the next Weser bridge (all information as the crow flies ).
The village of Weißehütte belongs to Gottstreu.
history
Gottstreu was founded in 1722 as a “colony” for Waldensian religious refugees from France by Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel , as was the nearby village of Gewissenruh . The landgrave personally chose the religiously influenced names of both places.
The colonies were laid out as street villages with twelve parcels. The new settlers lived from agriculture and forest work. Until 1825 French was spoken in church services and in school lessons. French inscriptions on house beams and French family names still bear witness to the past of the places popularly known as French villages.
Since February 1, 1971, the formerly independent municipality of Gottstreu was part of the municipality of Oberweser, which was newly created as part of the municipal regional reform, which merged with Wahlsburg to form the municipality of Wesertal on January 1, 2020 .
