Gewissenruh is a district of the Wesertal community in the Kassel district in northern Hesse .

Geographical location

The village of Gewissenruh is located in the far north of northern Hesse between the southern foothills of the Solling in southern Lower Saxony in the north and the northern roof of the Hessian Reinhardswald in the south. It is located on the left or western bank of the Weser , which forms the border with Lower Saxony here, on the opposite bank extends the Lower Saxon Bodenfelde , east of Gewissenruh lies Lippoldsberg , behind which the Kiffing ridge rises to the southeast , and to the west is Wahmbeck ( Part of the municipality of Bodenfelde).

Gieselwerder , a main administrative location of the Wesertal municipality, is 3.5 km south, Bad Karlshafen 6 km north-west, the small town Uslar around 8 km north-east, Hann. Münden 25 km and Kassel 36 km south.

Gewissenruh is around 40 m above the local Weser level. The mountains near the village include the Kuhläger Kopf ( 290.5  m ) in the Reinhardswald and beyond or north of the Weser the Kahlberg ( 224.7  m ) in the Solling.

history

Gewissenruh was founded in 1722 as a "colony" for Waldensian religious refugees from France by Landgrave Karl von Hessen-Kassel , as was the nearby village of Gottstreu . The landgrave personally chose the religiously influenced names of both places.

The colonies were laid out as street villages with 12 parcels. The new settlers lived from agriculture and forest work. Until 1825 French was spoken in church services and in school lessons. French inscriptions on house beams and French family names still bear witness to the past of the places popularly known as French villages.

Since February 1, 1971, the formerly independent municipality was part of the newly created municipality of Oberweser as part of the municipal regional reform, which merged with Wahlsburg to form the Wesertal municipality on January 1, 2020 .
