Wahlsburg was a municipality in the Kassel district in Hesse that existed from 1971 to 2019. It merged with its neighboring municipality of Oberweser to form the municipality of Wesertal .

geography

Location and structure

Wahlsburg was in the far north of northern Hesse on the Weser between the cities of Hann. Münden and Bad Karlshafen . The Solling rose to the north, the Kiffing to the south , behind which the Bramwald (in the southeast) was, and beyond the Weser the Reinhardswald (in the west to the south). The municipality was traversed by the Schwülme , which came from the east and flowed through the district of Lippoldsberg into the Weser .

The community Wahlsburg consisted of the two districts Lippoldsberg (seat of the community administration) and Vernawahlshausen . The mountain Wahlsburg , located between the two villages, did not belong to the municipality of Wahlsburg, but to that of the neighboring municipality of Oberweser . 2044 inhabitants lived in an area of 11.43 km² (as of December 31, 2018).

Neighboring communities

Wahlsburg bordered the area of Bodenfelde and the community-free area of Solling to the north, the city of Uslar (all three in the Northeim district in Lower Saxony ) to the east, the community of Oberweser to the south, the community-free area Guts Bezirk Reinhardswald to the west and Gewissenruh to the northwest , a part of the municipality of Oberweser (all in the Kassel district ).

history

In 1059, Archbishop Luitpold of Mainz had a wooden chapel built on the site of today's Lippoldsberg. The Vernawahlshausen district was first mentioned in 1233 as an election house. The name was later changed to better distinguish it from electoral houses , as it was located further away from the then seat of government. In the 18th century Vernawahlshausen was known as the largest linen bleaching company in Hessen .

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the two communities Lippoldsberg and Vernawahlshausen merged on February 1, 1971 to form the community of Wahlsburg. The name comes from the Carolingian Fliehburg , whose almost completely demolished ruins are located between the two districts.

The Wahlsburg part of the municipality Lippoldsberg had been a state-recognized climatic health resort since 1980 .

On October 28, 2018, parallel to the Hessian state election , a majority of the citizens of Wahlsburg voted in a referendum for the merger with the neighboring municipality of Oberweser to form a new municipality of Wesertal . The citizens of Oberweser also voted for the merger in a parallel referendum. The merger took place on January 1, 2020.
