The Bramburg is one of Hann. Munden owned castle ruins (about 11th century) in Bramwald in southern Lower Saxony district Goettingen in Germany .

Geographical location

The ruins of the hillside castle in the Münden Nature Park stand on the right bank of the Weser on the western slope of the Bramwald in the Oberwesertal . It is located in the district of Hemeln , which is now a northern district of Hann. Münden is. Glashütte , another small district of Hann, is just north of the former castle . Münden. The Bramburg was built on the west-northwest flank of the heavily wooded Hünenkopf ( 388.5  m above sea  level ) at around 210 m above sea level and stands almost 100 m above the Weser valley and over the state road  561 between Hemeln in the south and Glashütte in the north. On the opposite left bank of the Weser, west of Hemeln, is the district of Veckerhagen in the municipality of Reinhardshagen , which belongs to North Hesse, on the eastern roof of the Reinhardswald .

The ruins of the Bramburg can only be reached from the state road 561 on forest and hiking trails .

history

The origin of the Bramburg lies in the dark of history. It is believed that the castle complex has existed since the 11th century.

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1063. In the first half of the 13th century it was mentioned as a protective castle to secure the Corveyer territories. In the second half of this century, the castle and the surrounding lands belonged to the Guelph dukes. In the following years it came as a fief to the Lords of Stockhausen , who later used the castle as a robber baron nest. Therefore, the castle was partially destroyed in 1458 by the army of Landgrave Wilhelm of Thuringia . The castle complex remained in the possession of those in Stockhausen, whose successors it still belongs to today. The castle, which last only served as a residential and official residence, fell into disrepair around the middle of the 16th century and was already in ruins by the end of the 17th century.

today

The most striking building of the rectangular Bramburg is today the ruins of the 21.37 m high keep . This has a dungeon below the entrance at a height of 9.17 m . Above there are three floors that were also habitable in the event of a siege. In addition, parts of the curtain wall and other foundation walls have been preserved. The moat , which used to be extremely deep, has been partially filled in, but is still clearly visible.

Nowadays, the Bramburg is freely accessible as an open ruin; it is currently not possible to climb the tower. It is not cultivated.

Hünenburg Hemeln

About 500 m south-south-east of the Bramburg, on the western slope of the Hünenkopf in the forest, are the remains of the Hünenburg Hemeln , which is considered to be a rampart and refugee castle for the local population. It is assumed that it originated in the first centuries after Christianity and that it existed up to around the year 800 due to the discovery of Franconian equestrian warrior equipment. The triangular complex with no traces of settlement inside is almost 7 hectares in size.
