Cordell Barker (born September 10, 1956 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian animator and advertising artist.

Life

Barker grew up in Winnipeg and took an early interest in animation. In 1974, while still in school, he began working as an animator at the local Kenn Perkins Animation studio in Winnipeg. His early work included cel paintings for Sesame Street and works in the field of advertising films. Barker left Kenn Perkins Animation three years later and worked as a graphic artist.

He joined the National Film Board of Canada in 1982 , which had already opened a studio in Winnipeg in 1976. His first NFB film was The Cat Came Back in 1988 , for which he received an Oscar nomination in 1989 for Best Animated Short Film . After various projects in the advertising film sector, including commercials for Nike (he represented Canada on Nikes 180 series ) and Coca-Cola , Strange Invaders , another short animated film Barkers, followed in 2001 , which again received an Oscar nomination. Barker started working on Strange Invaders in the early 1990s when he first became a father.

It wasn't until 2009 that Barker released his third short animated film, Runaway , which, like the previous two, was also hand-animated. "The only reproach you can make Cordell Barker, one of Canada's most celebrated animators, is that he simply doesn't do enough because the meticulous hand-drawing process means that new projects take years to complete," said one reviewer at the performance of Runaway on the Sundance film Festival in 2010. in 2010, Barker set as a creative consultant to the Prairie and North West Center of the NFB and has been an advisor to the NFB regarding animation projects in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest of Canada and Nunavut operate.

Barker's films are known for their cutting edge humor. "What makes him special is that he believes that animation is more about timing, story and color than the drawing itself."
