occupation

The 2001 film War Photographer by producer and director Christian Frei accompanies war photographer James Nachtwey for two years in his work in crisis regions around the world. In addition to the work on site, the film contains reserved and taciturn interviews with Nachtwey, in which he talks about his work, his ideals and the dangerous work of his colleagues. Spread throughout the film, reporters and editors who work with him give interviews about Nachtwey's work and person.

Locations

The locations:

  • Kosovo : Nachtwey visits Kosovo after the end of the Kosovo war ; it shows the suffering of the people returning to their homes.
  • Jakarta , Indonesia : Nachtwey documents the poverty of the people who live in wooden huts next to railroad tracks on the outskirts of the city and collect recyclable items in landfills. Specifically, a homeless family is shown whose father has lost an arm and a leg.
  • Ramallah , Palestine : Nachtwey is in the midst of unrest, exposed to tear gas .
  • Opening of an exhibition of Nachtwey photos in New York City .
  • Sulfur mine at Kawah Ijen on East Java (Indonesia): Workers mine sulfur without breathing protection. Often nothing can be seen in front of yellow vapors.

particularities

Parts of the film were shot with a special camera that was attached to Nachtwey's photo camera and thus shows the events from his point of view or behind the camera.

Reviews

"War Photographer is a documentary that provides a multi-layered look behind the scenes of war and crisis photography."

- Jörn Schulz - filmstarts.de

“The makers of the film, namely Christian Frei and cameraman Peter Indergand, together with James Nachtwey, risked their lives for free reporting. This film is great and a must for anyone interested in politics. "

- Günter Hack - film headquarters

“War Photographer, the terrific documentary by Swiss director Christian Frei, tells why the American photographer doesn't look the other way in the crisis regions of the world. Frei makes the viewer a direct witness of Nachtwey's search for a moment of truth. "

- Thomas David - ART The art magazine

“In Frei's film, there is no inadmissible dramatization of images that speak for themselves anyway. An increasingly personal portrait of the war reporter emerges from an initial distance. Bit by bit this also results: the shock, the horror in the process of its manufacture. In keeping with the tone of maddened unmasking that documentarists often give so easily, it would of course be easy to accuse every war photographer of cynicism. Frei obviously does not feel empowered to do so. He sticks to his topic - that the person is Nachtwey - and respects it in an impressive way. "
