Émile Bravo (born September 18, 1964 in Paris ) is a French comic book artist , author and illustrator . It is particularly important to him that his works also appeal to children and he thinks it is wrong if only comics for adults are considered high-quality and demanding.

biography

Bravo was born in 1964 to Spanish exiles. His father had to flee from Franco and met his mother in France. As a child he was an avid reader of the Franco-Belgian comic canon with works by Goscinny , Hergé , Peyo and Morris , as a youngster by Hugo Pratt , especially his Corto Maltese . Later Yves Chaland , the scenario writer Yann and Franquin also became important role models.

In addition to Hergé, the collaboration with Joann Sfar and Christophe Blain influenced his style. In 1992 he joined Atelier Nawak (44 rue de Quincampoix) in Paris , where they both worked. Here he learned the L'Association Artists Jean-Christophe Menu , Lewis Trondheim and David B. know. At that time he had already published his first two published comic volumes: Fighters and Ivoire , the latter at least appeared in the Atomium '58 series, but not in German. They also went largely unnoticed in France and Belgium. He began his first long series in the Nawak studio . The title character of the three-volume series, Aleksis Strogonov , alludes to Michael Strogoff , the hero from The Czar's Courier .

In general, Bravo appreciates working together in a studio with friends. After the time in Atelier Nawak he belongs to Atelier des Vosges ( Eng . "Atelier of the Vosges"), currently, together with Nine Antico to Studio La Piscine ("The Swimming Pool").

In his early days as a draftsman, he made a good living from commissioned illustrations. But he prefers to create his own universes in comics, which is now also economically interesting. Occasionally, however, he continues to work as an illustrator for French children's and youth magazines as well as a draftsman and author of children's books. With his first self-written series, Paul's fantastic adventures (French: Une épatante aventure de Jules ), he won the Prix René Goscinny in 2002 . The space explorer Jules is a child, so this comic is intended to appeal to young readers. His series on The Seven Dwarf Bears mixes numerous legends and fairy tales. According to Volker Hamann, her absurd joke is somewhat comparable to Shrek (the 2001 film), “ but much quieter and friendlier. "

My mother is in America and met Buffalo Bill as the final breakthrough in his career . The graphic novel for children has won numerous prizes, including one in Angoulême in 2008 and the 2010 German Youth Literature Prize in the children's book category. As a result, he was also able to produce a “special volume” on Spirou and Fantasio : Portrait of a hero as a young goal . As in the second to fifth volumes by Jules , the coloring of this work was done by La Piscine colleague Delphine Chédru.
