Jean-Patrick Manchette (born December 19, 1942 in Marseille , † June 3, 1995 in Paris ) was a French writer and journalist , who is particularly known as a crime writer and critic of crime novels .

life and work

Jean-Patrick Manchette was the author of 'classic' crime novels and novel noirs , but also a literary and film critic who made the new French crime novel of the 1970s famous. He also wrote dialogues and scripts for film and television and worked as a translator. He was considered an important representative of neo-polar , a variant of Roman noir, but also stood in a direct line of tradition with the great masters of American hardboiled detective crime novels ( Hammett and Chandler ).

He was politically active from an early age, especially as an opponent of the Algerian war , then in the left-wing extremist scene and in the movement of the Situationist International . He was also a big fan of jazz .

He made his debut in the Série noire , a series of books at Gallimard specializing in Roman noir , in 1971 with Laissez bronzer les cadavres (together with Jean-Pierre Bastid ) and with L'Affaire N'Gustro , which was followed by nine other novels. He has also translated works by Robert Littell , Robert Bloch , John Buell , Ross Thomas and Donald E. Westlake and was a literary critic for the magazines Charlie Hebdo , Polar and Liberation . The 2015 film The Gunman is based on one of his novels.

Manchette has also written numerous scripts for television series and movies since the 1960s. He fell ill with severe agoraphobia and spent most of the rest of his life in his home. He died of lung cancer on June 3, 1995.

His son Doug Headline is a film critic and director. In 2018, together with Max Cabanes, he wrote the scenario for the comic book Nada , which is an adaptation of his father's novel of the same name.

Quote

"Le bon roman noir est un roman social, un roman de critique sociale, qui prend pour anecdote des histoires de crimes." (Jean-Patrick Manchette, 1993)

"A good novel noir is a social novel, a socially critical novel that takes the story of a crime as the superficial plot." (Jean-Patrick Manchette, 1993)
