The wine-growing region lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains . The main varieties grown are Zinfandel , Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot . The vineyards are at a height of 360 m to 1,050 m above sea level. NN . The best vineyards are usually over 650 m high. The acidic soil is predominantly of volcanic origin.

South of the El Dorado AVA are the wine-growing regions of Fiddletown AVA and California Shenandoah Valley AVA .

climate

There is a Mediterranean climate with mild, mostly humid winter and warm dry summer. Since the area is about 150 kilometers from the coast of the Pacific , it is often very hot in midsummer. The low humidity and the wind, which brings cool air from San Francisco Bay and the mountains at night , make the stay bearable and make viticulture at this altitude possible.
