California Shenandoah Valley AVA (recognized since December 28, 1982) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is in the Amador County and El Dorado Counties , east of Sacramento . The wine-growing region lies at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains , south of the El Dorado AVA .

The first vineyards were laid out during the California gold rush from 1848. In the 1970s, the famous began Winery Sutter Home Winery bottling of Zinfandel from California Shenandoah Valley grapes. Next to the Zinfandel, the Syrah is the most important grape variety .

The state of Virginia also has a wine-growing region called the Shenandoah Valley AVA .
