Fair Play AVA (recognized since February 26, 2001) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is not far from the city of Sacramento , but in the administrative area of El Dorado County . The wine-growing area is completely enclosed by the El Dorado AVA and Sierra Foothills AVA . The vineyards are at an altitude of 600 m to 900 m above sea level. NN . This makes Fair Play the highest wine-growing region in California on average. The most important grape variety is Zinfandel , but the proportion of southern French and Italian grapes is steadily increasing.

climate

Because the area is 120 kilometers from the coast of the Pacific , it is often very hot in midsummer. The low humidity and the wind, which brings cool air in from the San Francisco Bay at night , make the stay bearable and viticulture at this altitude possible. There is a Mediterranean climate with mild, mostly humid winter and warm dry summer.
