The École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs , or »Arts Déco« for short, officially abbreviated to ENSAD, is a grande école for (literally) applied arts, i.e. graphics, communication design and interior architecture in the rue d'Ulm in the 5th arrondissement of Paris . It emerged from the École Royale Gratuite de Dessin , which was founded in 1766 by Jean-Jacques Bachelier and in the following year with a patent Louis XV. opened. After several changes of name, it was called École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs from 1877 and received its current name in 1925.
history
The original aim was to train painters to improve the design of industrial products. In the course of time the artistic ambitions of the training increased and the school became a training center for graphics. Under the direction of León Moussignac, interior design was added as a further area of expertise.
In the 1960s, the school became a center of industrial design with the teaching of Roger Tallon . Under the direction of Michel Tourlière, new areas of responsibility were textile, furniture and photo design, stage design, video and computer graphics.
