John Howe (born August 21, 1957 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian book illustrator .

Together with Alan Lee and Ted Nasmith, he is considered one of the most important illustrators of the works of JRR Tolkien .

Life

Howe attended college in Strasbourg ( France ) in 1976 , but switched to the École supérieure des arts décoratifs the next year . Today he lives with his wife Fataneh - also an illustrator (including several covers for the books by Federica DeCesco) - and his son Dana in Neuchâtel , Switzerland .

In addition to numerous children's books, he also illustrated the Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion . He drew numerous Tolkien calendars (including 1987 and 1988 partially, the complete calendars 1991, 1995, 1997, 2001) as well as some pictures to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first publication of the Hobbit . He also worked as a conceptual artist on the production of The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit film trilogy.

John Howe is also an expert on weapons, armor and everyday life in the Middle Ages , the highly acclaimed work Mercenary Life in the Middle Ages , on which he worked, was published by Motorbuch-Verlag .

His latest publication is Myth & Magic - The Art Of John Howe , published by Harper Collins .
