Holly Woodlawn (* 26. October 1946 in Juana Diaz , Puerto Rico as Haroldo Santiago Franceschi Rodriguez Danhakl ; † 6. December 2015 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress and transgender -Aktivistin. In the early 1970s she was one of the Andy Warhol superstars and the Factory scene. She was best known for the song Walk on the Wild Side , in which Lou Reed sang about her.

biography

Holly Woodlawn was born Haroldo Santiago Franceschi Rodriguez Danhakl in Puerto Rico in 1946. Her father was an American soldier with German ancestry, her mother Aminta Rodriguez was from Puerto Rico. Woodlawn grew up in Miami Beach . At 16, she ran away from home and changed her name to Holly Woodlawn.

Lou Reed sang in Walk on the Wild Side in 1972 :

Holly came from Miami, FLA
Hitchhiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, "Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side."

Woodlawn met Andy Warhol in his factory . In 1970 she played the leading role in the film Trash . Her other films include Women in Revolt (1971) and Scarecrow in a Garden of Cucumbers (1972); she also appeared in theater productions. The German director Rosa von Praunheim also documented them in some of his films.

After her time as a Warhol superstar, Woodlawn's success faded. In 1991 she published her autobiography A Low Life in High Heels with co-author Jeff Copeland . In the 1990s she had a small comeback; she made appearances in Night Owl (1993) and Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss (1998) , among others . After the turn of the millennium, she performed successfully in cabaret shows .

Holly Woodlawn died of cancer on December 6, 2015 in Los Angeles.
