Nigel Hector Munro Stock (born September 21, 1919 in Malta , † June 22, 1986 in London , England ) was a British actor .

Life

Stock grew up in his native Malta and in British India before the family moved to Great Britain . He began his career in the theater in the 1930s and took on his first small film roles. After serving in the army and serving in Asia during World War II , he was able to establish himself as a busy character actor in film and television productions at the end of the 1940s. He has worked primarily in British films, but has occasionally appeared in Hollywood productions.

Stock's presence was limited almost exclusively to supporting roles, for example in The Lion in Winter and Rebellion . Perhaps his best-known part was the quirky ex-teacher Waxflatter in the Steven Spielberg production The Secret of the Hidden Temple , which thematizes the life of the young Sherlock Holmes. Between 1964 and 1968, Stock gave the Dr. Watson in the popular BBC television series Sherlock Holmes . At his side initially Douglas Wilmer , later Peter Cushing, played the role of master detective.

Nigel Stock died in 1986 of complications from a heart attack . He was married three times, including to British actresses Sonia Williams and Richenda Carey. Four children emerged from these relationships.
