Donald F. Haines (born April 9, 1918 or May 9, 1919 in Seward County , Nebraska , † probably February 1943 ) was an American actor who was mainly active as a child actor and mainly through his appearances in the film series The Little ones Thugs became known.

Life

Born in Nebraska in 1918, Haines began his acting career at the age of ten and eleven, respectively, when he was called to the production of various Smitty short films in 1928 . Up until 1929 he was seen in a total of ten film adaptations of the Smitty comics and only shortly afterwards was cast as the little rascals , in which he was used in several episodes and short films. He made his debut in Shivering Shakespeare and then acted in one of the leading roles on his second appearance in The First Seven Years alongside Jackie Cooper . Up to and including 1933 he was a member of the cast of the still-known Die-kleine-Trolche-films , but was poached in 1931 by Paramount Pictures , who signed the young star for the film Skippy . There, too, he was deployed alongside Jackie Cooper. Haines' last role in The Little Rascals was in the 1933 film Fish Hooky . This was followed by engagements in various short films, but sometimes also in larger film productions. In 1933 he could be seen in the short film Flirting in the Park , followed by appearances in Die Jungs aus der Paulsgasse , Little Man, What Now? , Manhattan Melodrama , I'll Fix It , Peck's Bad Boy, and Now I'll Tell in 1934.

With Manhattan Melodrama (starring among others with Clark Gable ) he starred in a film that was subsequently awarded the Oscar for best original story at the 1935 Academy Awards . In 1935, the young Donald Haines was also used in various film productions and was seen in films such as Straight from the Heart , Fräulein Wirbelwind , Ginger , The Nitwits , His Night Out , Annie Oakley and Flucht aus Paris . The latter film was even nominated in two categories ( Best Film and Best Editing ) at the Academy Awards in 1937 , but ultimately failed to win either of the two awards. 1936 followed engagements for other films such as The Last Gangster , Love Before Breakfast , The Little Lord , Little Miss Nobody and Bunker Bean and in the following year 1937 Haines was used in various films. These include Two Wise Maids , Rhythm in the Clouds , Super-Sleuth , The Boss Didn't Say Good Morning and Love and Hisses followed by four films in 1938.

In that year he was seen in addition to Kidnapped , Three Comrades and Down on the Farm in the film Teufelskerle , which was awarded the following year at the Academy Awards in 1939 in the categories of "Best Original Story" and " Best Actor " (for Spencer Tracy ) and in three other categories was nominated. After a rather quiet year in 1939, in which he could be seen in only two productions ( Sergeant Madden and Never Say Die ), a series of film productions followed from 1940 onwards. So Haines was brought into the cast of the film East Side Kids alongside other actors such as Hally Chester , Harris Berger or Frankie Burke . Due to the financial success of the film of the same name, director and producer Sam Katzman in particular created a group of characters with the " East Side Kids " who could be seen in a series of films from 1940 to 1945 and those briefly as well Donald Haines belonged to. He mimed the two characters Pee Wee and Skinny, among others . As Pee Wee he appeared in East Side Kids and a year later in Boys of the City and was then replaced by David Gorcey , who took on the role. As Skinny , he starred in that Gang of Mine , Pride of the Bowery , Flying Wild , Bowery Blitzkrieg and Spooks Run Wild in five films in which he played the same role in 1940 and 1941 . He was also seen in other film productions.

On December 10, 1941, just three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor , Haines was called up as an aviation cadet in the United States Army Air Forces to serve in World War II . He was a member of the successor association of the United States Army Air Corps , which was dissolved in June 1941, until his presumed death in February 1943. For Haines, as for many soldiers lost in the war, the status Missing in Action applies ; According to another source, he has the status Killed in Action . At the time of his disappearance, he held the rank of First Lieutenant . The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), based in Washington, DC, also lists Donald Haines, who went to high school for four years in addition to his time as an actor , in their Army directory. However, there are differences in its Army Serial Number , which varies in different reports between the numbers 19063043 and O-726229 .
