Carole Landis (born January 1, 1919 in Fairchild , Wisconsin , † July 5, 1948 in Pacific Palisades , California ; born Frances Lillian Mary Ridste ) was an American actress .

Career

She was already on the stage at the age of twelve, as a lolita-like competitor in beauty contests. After smaller jobs, she went to San Francisco in 1934, where she performed as a singer and hula dancer in a nightclub. Two years later, Carole Landis had reached Hollywood , where she made her film debut in 1936.

During the war she was active in the US troop support program, and published her experiences under the title "Four Jills in a Jeep".

On February 8, 1960, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1765 Vine Street.

Carole Landis was temporarily the lover of 20th Century Fox boss Darryl F. Zanuck , who tried to launch her career as best he could.

Landis was married five times:

  • with Jack Robbins (1934–1934; canceled)
  • with Jack Robbins (1934–1939; divorce)
  • with Willis Hunt jr. (1940–1940; divorce)
  • with Thomas C. Wallace (1943–1945; divorce)
  • with W. Horace Schmidlapp (1945–1948)

In July 1948, shortly after returning from England, where she had made two films, Carole Landis hit the headlines. Out of an unhappy love for her colleague Rex Harrison , who was then married to actress Lilli Palmer and with whom she had an affair, she took her own life with tablets. A source points out that her contract with 20th Century Fox had also expired around that time . She was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale .
