The Nidda glider airfield is located on a hill between the town of Nidda and the districts of Geiß-Nidda and Bad Salzhausen . The site is home to the gliding club Fliegersportklub (FSK) Nidda and the motor flying club Fliegersportclub Roter Milan (RM) Nidda.

history

Six years after the end of the war, on June 18, 1951, the Allied High Commission lifted the ban on gliding in the Federal Republic.

From 1952 gliding was carried out on the standing fields slope. However, this could not be used all year round due to agricultural use and floods.

In 1956, Anton Nies was considering allowing the then wasteland, the Helmsberg, as a flying site. Under the leadership of the chairman Adolf von Hanier, a provisional user permit for gliding on the Hermes was obtained, but this was only valid for experienced pilots. Permanent approval was granted in 1956.

After extensive grading work in 1957 and 1974, glider pilots had a runway around 800 meters long and 30 meters wide. In August 1963, in memory of the fatally injured Adolf von Hanier, the newly built aircraft hangar was named "Adolf von Hanier Halle".

In 1981, after around two years of construction, the clubhouse was inaugurated.

In 1986 the Red Milan Aviation Club moved to the Hermes and built another hangar there.
