Otto Rippert (born October 22, 1869 in Offenbach am Main , † January 18, 1940 in Berlin ) was a German theater actor and film director and a pioneer of German silent films .

Life

Rippert worked at theaters in Baden-Baden , Forst , Bamberg and Berlin. In 1906 he directed his first film for the French company Gaumont in Baden-Baden . It wasn't until 1912 that he came into contact with film again when he starred in the Titanic film In Nacht und Eis . In the same year he began directing film. In the 1910s, Rippert was one of the most productive German directors.

His greatest achievements for early German film are the six-part series on the artificial human Homunculus from 1916 and the historic monumental film Die Pest in Florenz (1919), for which Fritz Lang wrote the screenplay. In 1919, Lang worked as a scriptwriter for Rippert on two other films.

After 1925 Otto Rippert withdrew from directing and worked as an editor . Today his work has almost been forgotten.
