Hans Oberländer

Johannes (Hans) Emanuel Ignatz Oberländer (born March 14, 1870 in Prague , † January 30, 1942 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German director of early silent films .

Live and act

Oberländer studied German Philology and received his doctorate with the dissertation The Theory of German Dramatic Art in the 18th Century, Its Origin and Development (published in 1896). With The Spiritual Development of German Drama in the 18th Century , the native of Prague presented another specialist publication in 1898. At the turn of the century, he went on a wandering life as an actor and director through the provinces. According to his own information, Oberländer claims to have served five years under Max Reinhardt and another five years at the Wiesbaden Royal Drama . At the latter stage he can also be traced back to the late 1900s as a dramaturge .

Through Oskar Messter , Dr. Hans Oberländer to the film in 1912. In the following ten years he was, just after Adolf Gärtner , who was of the same age , probably the most productive director of the early German silent film era. None of his productions have any artistic or film historical significance, but his works enjoyed some popularity among the discerning audience in the early years of cinematography. He made Harry Liedtke known to a wider audience in 1913, shot melodramas with Ressel Orla and Mia May and was also responsible for series crime novels like The Onyx Button with Max Landa as Joe Deebs . After the Marija Leiko film Die Frau von Morgen (1921), Oberländer did not get any directing orders.

Subsequently, until the end of the silent film era, he was only seen occasionally as a film actor; his last role was that of a pastor in the September 1929 educational film Fertility . With the beginning of the sound film era, its track is lost. Dr. Hans Oberländer had been married since 1904.
