Carlo Savina (born August 2, 1919 in Turin , † June 20, 2002 in Rome ) was an Italian film composer .

life and work

Savina completed his training at the Turin Conservatory in composition, violin, piano, organ and orchestral conducting and became first violinist and conductor of the orchestra of the RAI . His great success on radio during the 1950s led to commissioned work for film scores.

Here he skilfully combined symphonic music and songs into film scores. For a long time he was the preferred conductor of Nino Rota and was responsible for Fellini's best film scores . In this capacity he was responsible for the music recordings of z. B. Ben Hur , Sodom and Gomorrah , El Cid , The Godfather , Tess and Romeo and Juliet .

Savina has worked with orchestras around the world and created over 150 pieces of music for films of all genres. Many of his compositions became jukebox hits of the 1960s and 1970s, and the films themselves usually lacked class, which diminished the success of the compositions.

In addition to his active work, he worked for many years as a functionary in associations and was an advisor to the Società Italiani Autori ed Editori (SIAE) .
