Five bloody ropes (Original title: Joko, Invoca dio ... e muori ) is a spaghetti western in German co-production, Antonio Margheriti staged under his Stammpseudonym. The German-language premiere was on October 30, 1970.
action
Joko / Rocco, Mendoza, Richie and Domingo attack a couple of bandits who have stolen a truckload of gold. But Domingo is a traitor, and Mendoza disappears into the corridors of an underground mine when he is supposed to cover the retreat of the other two. Richie escapes with the gold, but is caught by five bandits. His silence about the planned meeting point with Rocco costs him his life: He is torn apart by their horses. Rocco then sets out to avenge the death of his friend and can first kill four of them, on whose corpses he throws a bloody piece of rope. The last of them reveals to Rocco that the fifth man he is looking for is none other than Mendoza, who is actually the leader and who planned the attack from the beginning. Rocco looks for Mendoza in his cave system and can finally confront him and shoot him in a duel. Pinkerton agent Lester takes the gold.
criticism
The critics emphasized the radicalism of the story, sometimes clearly negative (“Italo-Western with cheap revenge story, endless shootings and sadistic torture scenes.”), Sometimes more mildly: “Christian commandments of charity are brutally disregarded, and forgiveness is also a word that does not exist in the vocabulary of the Indian. […] ”writes Christian Keßler , who emphasizes the horror of the last quarter of an hour and the villain of the story:“ Like a deranged creepy spirit from a nightmare of Charles Dickens (Claudio Camaso) wanders around and is dressed in white. ”The Italian critics of the Segnalazioni Cinematografichi were also disappointed; they saw a “modest Western that follows overused and conventional narrative patterns.” The Evangelical Film Observer remarks succinctly that the film is an “indisputable rubbish product” that is sharply rejected.
Remarks
You can hear the song Vengeance , which Don Powell sings. 5 pieces of the soundtrack were released on LP (CAM 10.018).
