Lunéville Castle
The Lunéville Castle is a castle in the French city Lunéville .
The Dukes of Lorraine had owned a castle in Lunéville since the 13th century . Duke Leopold had the current castle built between 1703 and 1720 by master builders Pierre Bourdict , Nicolas Dorbay and above all Germain Boffrand , parts of which were destroyed by fire in 1719.
The masterpiece of 18th century architecture is also known as the "Lorraine Versailles " and was classified in 1901 as a Monument historique . The last Duke of Lorraine, Stanislaus I. Leszczyński , died here in 1766 from injuries sustained by a fire in his room. This date marks the final takeover of the Duchy of Lorraine by France under the agreements of the Peace of Vienna (1738) . The former princely rooms now belong to the Ministry of Defense and the rest of the building to the Conseil Général de la Meurthe-et-Moselle .
The castle was badly damaged in a fire in January 2003 . The Conseil général in Nancy is collecting donations to restore the destroyed parts of the castle.
