In the shadow of the murderer is a Spanish crime film by Jess Franco , the plot of which is allegedly based on the story "The Cat and the Canary" by Edgar Allan Poe , which of course does not even exist; in fact it is a play by John Willard . The film premiered on September 29, 1974 at the Sitges Film Festival .

Jennings, Lady Cecilia Marion, Deborah Potts, Martha and Simon Tobias once had Lord Marion removed. Jennings took up his position. After the murder of the fake Lord Marion, the hoax is exposed, as two significantly contradicting wills emerge: a current and a 20 year old from the real Lord Marion.

Lord Marion had survived the assassination attempt and is now taking revenge on his "murderers". They find death one after the other, as prophesied in the book "The Apocalypse": The false Lord Marion is buried alive, Lady Cecilia Marion dies chained to a rock by the storm, Deborah Potts is burned and Martha Tobias is murdered in a bathtub.

Others

Director Jess Franco wrote the script under the pen name James P. Johnson. Allegedly the plot is based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe, but in fact the play "The Cat and the Canary", which was made into a film by Paul Leni in 1927, served as a template . Franco also mentioned in an interview that a story by Edgar Wallace also served as the basis for the film.

The film was shot back in 1973.
