action

Chata, a Cherokee, is in love with the white farmer's daughter Mabel. Their father Nat Masters, however, shares the opinion of most in the village of Rockstone that Indians can only have evil in mind; Mabel's mother was an Indian herself and committed suicide out of grief over the child's father.

Since Masters needs wood to fulfill a contract, he wants to clear a forest that belongs to the Indians. With the help of his sons he fakes an Indian attack in order to be able to present the clearing as revenge; as the Indians resist, there are dead and Chata is thrown into prison. Mabel, who was promised to the timber merchant Lasky without her knowledge, testifies against Chata out of loyalty to her father.

Released from prison, he takes revenge for the injustice suffered with the help of the pious trader Jonathan.
