action

The young seaman Edmond Dantès arrives at the port of Marseille on the ship “Pharao” . There the Pharaoh's paymaster, Danglars, the cousin of Edmond's fiancé Mercédès, Mondego, and Edmond's neighbor Caderousse, who all have reason to be jealous of Edmond, spin a conspiracy against Edmond, in which the prosecutor de Villefort is also involved. The reason for this is the supposed closeness of Edmond to Napoleon , since he had called at Elba on behalf of the previously deceased captain. So he ends up in the Château d'If , the prison for enemies of the state off the city on an island. After a long time there, he meets fellow inmate Abbé Faria, an intellectual who got lost while trying to escape to Edmond's cell. Together they discuss the circumstances surrounding Edmond's detention. Faria tells him the location of a hidden and immeasurable treasure on the island of Monte Christo and dies. Edmond flees. As a rich and unapproachable man in the form of the "Count of Monte Christo", he succeeds in various roles in tracking down his conspirators and taking revenge on them unrecognized. Caderousse is now a poor innkeeper, Danglars a rich banker, Mondego officer and husband of Mercédès and de Villefort royal prosecutor. In the course of Edmond Dantès' campaign of revenge, the conspirators and those involved are killed or discredited.
