Life

Nathaniel Carl Goodwin

Nat Goodwin was born in Boston in 1857. As a pupil and student he noticed his mimic skills, the desire to become a stage actor matured, and so he began to read Shakespeare and take acting lessons. In 1873 he graduated from college, moved to New York and initially worked as a salesman and caretaker. When he first appeared at the Providence Opera House , he was speechless because of the stage fright. For the time being, he had to work as a salesman in Boston again. But he constantly presented his facial expressions at private and public events until he got an engagement at the Athenaeum , where he imitated well-known actors. He was so successful that Joseph Brad wrote a sketch for him. In 1875 he had his first speaking role in Tony Pastor's theater and shortly thereafter appeared with Minnie Palmer at the Fourteenth Street Theater . From then on, Goodwin took on increasingly important roles.

Godwin became his own manager in 1882 and produced numerous operas by Gilbert and Sullivan in the years that followed .

Goodwin also appeared in a number of films between 1912 and 1916. In Oliver Twist he played the role of Fagin.

He died in New York in 1919. He was buried in Milton Cemetery in Milton Massachusetts.
