Miguel Gila

Miguel Gila Cuesta (born March 13, 1919 in Madrid , † July 13, 2001 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish comedian and actor .

Life

Gila, who was born in the Chamberí district of Madrid , joined the Republican Youth Brigade ( Juventudes Socialistas Unificadas ) in the Spanish Civil War and barely escaped execution after being captured by Francoist troops. During the ensuing imprisonment, his wit and comedy became apparent, so that after his release he first worked as a cartoonist , later as an entertainer in nightclubs and on the radio; later on TV too.

In the late 1960s he moved to Argentina , where he led a theater company; In 1985 he retired to Spain.

Gila also acted in about 20 films and was the editor of several books.
