The former Marxgrün station is located on the Hof – Bad Steben railway line, which opened in 1887 . It was the end point of this route until 1898. From 1901 the train station was a branch station for the railway line through Höllental towards Gera and later also Saalfeld . With the end of the Second World War , the Höllentalbahn lost its supra-regional importance, and was completely discontinued in the early 1980s. Today the Marxgrün stop on the regional train from Hof to Bad Steben has been set up on the site of the former train station . The place Marxgrün was incorporated into the city of Naila in 1978 .

history

Coat of arms of the Bavarian State Railways

On June 1, 1887, the local railway line of the Royal Bavarian State Railways (K.Bay.Sts.B.) was opened in the eastern Franconian Forest . The railway line had its starting point in the new Hofer Hauptbahnhof . There were connections to Munich, Nuremberg, Würzburg, Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. The standard-gauge branch line reached its terminus near the village of Marxgrün via Selbitz and Naila .

The route of the K.Bay-Sts.B. from Hof to Marxgrün was extended to the Bavarian state spa in Steben in 1898. Locomotive sheds and other railway systems typical of terminal stations remained in Marxgrün.

"Unofficial" coat of arms of the Prussian state railway

After the turn of the century, in 1901, a connection to Thuringia was established. The new route led through the Höllental to Blankenstein and from there to Triptis and Gera. The line was built and operated by the Prussian State Railways . The Marxgrün station thus became the transfer station between the Bavarian and Prussian state railways. Later this line received a branch to Saalfeld . After the establishment of the Deutsche Reichsbahn, there were also non-stop passenger trains on the Hof – Marxgrün – Lobenstein – Saalfeld route .

At the K.Bay.Sts.B. Around 1920 there were plans for another branch line from Marxgrün to Geroldsgrün . The existing railway facilities in Marxgrün with a locomotive shed and workshop could have been used to operate this route. However, the line was never built.

With the establishment of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1924, the Marxgrün station lost its function as a transfer station between the Bavarian and Prussian state railways. However, the border between the Reichsbahndirektion (Rbd) Regensburg of the Bavarian group administration and the Thuringian Rbd Erfurt continued to run directly at the Marxgrüner station entrance.

Track plan

During the Second World War , diversion routes were established for important main routes and expanded accordingly. The connection Hof – Naila – Marxgrün – Lobenstein – Triptis – Gera was part of such a diversion route between southern and central Germany. In the course of the expansion of the diversion route, the Marxgrün station received a mechanical signal box and wing signals for entry and exit tracks.

This high point of the route expansion was quickly followed by the low point. After the war, the demarcation line separated the German states of Bavaria and Thuringia. The train service between Marxgrün and Blankenstein has been discontinued. All that remained was the transport of goods to the train stations at Hölle and Lichtenberg on the edge of the Höllental. The stretch between Marxgrün and the state border was finally reclassified from the Rbd Erfurt to the Rbd Regensburg and thus still “Bavarian”.

building

Railway workers' houses

The reception building is still there today on the area around the station. It now serves as a holiday home for vacationers. Attached to the station building is a wooden porch in which the station's signal box was housed. During the Second World War, the connection Hof – Marxgrün – Triptis – Gera – Leipzig was an important bypass route for the main line Hof – Plauen – Leipzig and was therefore equipped with signals and signal boxes.

Next to the station building in the direction of Bad Steben and Höllental was the toilet facility.

In the direction of Naila, the goods shed was attached to the station building. It was torn down.

Behind the station building in the direction of Naila are two former railway workers' houses. Today they are used as tenement houses.

Engine shed with workshop

On the side of the station opposite the station building is the station's two-tier locomotive shed with an attached workshop. The locomotive shed was the heart of the locomotive station in Marxgrün. The long-unused building is falling into disrepair and is for sale. At the end of the 20th century, the steam locomotive for the proposed museum railway through Höllental was parked in the locomotive shed. At the beginning of the sales process, the shed had to be cleared and the steam locomotive was moved to the locomotive shed of the Adorf railway depot.

Horwagen marble

business

DB Netze is the operator of the station as a railway infrastructure company . In June 2011, agilis took over the implementation of train traffic from DB Regio . The order from the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) is valid until 2023.
