Maria Jacobini

Maria Jacobini (born February 17, 1890 in Rome ; † November 20, 1944 there ) was an Italian actress in domestic and German film.

Live and act

Maria Jacobini, who was one of the most celebrated silent film divas in her country in the 10s and 20s , became the granddaughter of the Cardinal and State Secretary of Pope Leo XIII. , Lodovico Jacobini , born. She learned her artistic craft at the Accademia dell'Arte Drammatica in her hometown of Rome. In 1910 Maria Jacobini made her film debut. Jacobini played famous female characters from contemporary history such as Lucrezia Borgia , Beatrice Cenci or Jeanne d'Arc in the films of the same name, but also appeared in melodramas and comedies. Her partner Gennaro Righelli directed it several times . Her gesture was expansive and expressive, her characters sometimes melancholy and resigned to fate (“Come le foglie”), sometimes exuberantly happy (“Addio giovinezza!”).

At the turn of the year 1922/23, Maria Jacobini went to Berlin with Righelli, where she made a plethora of productions over the next five years, often films with melodramatic content. She was only able to make her first German film in her own production (Maria Jacobini-Film GmbH). After her temporary return to Rome, Jacobini continued her German film work in 1926. Her last work in Berlin was "at the same time her most rewarding": Fedor Ozep's version of Leo Tolstoy's The Living Corpse . In it she played Lisa Protasova. In 1929 Maria Jacobini went to France for a film guest appearance, where Julien Duvivier cast her in the title role in " Irene Rysbergue's great love " - a married woman from French society who was neglected by her husband. Then she returned to Rome.

With the beginning of the sound film age, the Italian, who barely spoke the German language, only shot in Cinecittà , but without being able to follow up on her greatest successes. On the side, from 1937 to 1943, she also taught the art of speaking at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia . Alida Valli and Clara Calamai were among her students . Maria Jacobini's sister Diomira Jacobini (1899–1959) also worked as an actress.
