Sondra Locke (born May 28, 1944 as Sandra Louise Smith in Shelbyville , Tennessee , † November 3, 2018 in Los Angeles ) was an American actress and director .

life and career

Locke grew up in Shelbyville, Tennessee, her birthplace. In the mid-1960s, she had her first name changed to Sondra . From 1967 until her death, Locke was married to her close childhood friend, the homosexual sculptor Gordon Anderson, in a platonic marriage. She studied at Middle Tennessee State University before being discovered during a 1968 casting organized by Warner Bros. for the film The Heart Is A Lone Hunter . In 1969 she received a nomination for an Oscar for best supporting actress and two nominations for a Golden Globe for best supporting actress and for best young actress .

Sondra Locke was best known on the side of Clint Eastwood , with whom she was also in a relationship from 1975 to 1989. The two made six films together, including The Texan (1976) and Dirty Harry Comes Back (1983). In 1986 she directed her first film with Ratboy . For her acting performance in it she was nominated for the Golden Raspberry .

After separating from Clint Eastwood, Locke filed a maintenance lawsuit against him. Part of the agreement finally reached between the previous partners was, in addition to a financial contribution, a contract with the Warner Bros. studio, for which Locke was to direct three films. When the projects did not go ahead, she sued the studio and reached an out-of-court settlement in 1999 for the payment of an undisclosed sum.

In 1990 Locke was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 1997 she published her autobiography The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly: A Hollywood Journey . She lived in Hollywood with her partner, a surgeon . She died of cancer at the age of 74.
