Katina Paxinou
Katina Paxinou ( Greek Κατίνα Παξινού , born December 17, 1900 in Piraeus , † February 22, 1973 in Athens ) was a Greek actress and Oscar winner .
Life
The Greek character actress started filming in 1928 and has been one of Greece's great theater actresses since the early 1930s. Together with her husband Alexis Minotis , she was part of the ensemble of the Greek National Theater. In 1943 she was hired by Hollywood for the film adaptation of the Ernest Hemingway bestseller Whom the Hour Takes and received an Oscar for best supporting actress and a Golden Globe Award in the same category for her portrayal of a Spanish resistance fighter against the fascists . She was also one of the first non-American actresses to win an Oscar.
Katina Paxinou died of cancer in 1973, leaving behind her husband Alexis Minotis. The Paxinou Minotis Museum in Athens commemorates the couple.
